In the late 1860's, a total of nineteen Welsh churches were organized in Trumbull County, which included Welsh Baptist, Welsh Presbyterian, and Welsh Congregational. The 1866 discovery of coal in Vienna brought with it an influx of persons with different nationalities, religious beliefs, and ethnic heritages. The majority of foreign-born residents during the coal boom hailed from Wales and Germany.
There is evidence that a Welsh Baptist congregation existed in Vienna Township. The congregation was active in the 1880s, however a building that the congregation used has yet to be discovered.
Coal mining in Vienna was on the decline by 1890 and miners and their families left, looking for new work elsewhere.
