In 1860 John C. Boyd was living in Vienna in the Lowry household and was working as a carpenter. His name appears on Civil War Draft Registration records of 1863. By then twenty-nine years old, Boyd was a married mechanic.

After the Civil War Boyd returned to Vienna and reported to the Census in 1870 that he was a carpenter.
