The name of Elbert M. Hunt appears on the 1890 Veterans Schedule for Vienna, Ohio. He enlisted in Westfield, New York on August 30, 1862. Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Hunt served as a Private for the Union in the 154th New York Infantry from September 24, 1862 to June 11, 1865. He fought in the battle of Gettysburg and the battle of Chancellorsville. He mustered out of service in Bladensburg, Maryland. According to the Veterans Schedule, Hunt suffered from "Brain Disease" occurring at the "Close of the war," perhaps what we would call Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
In the 1870 Census at South Valley, Cattaraugus, New York, he was listed as a farm laborer. In Civil War pension files, Hunt's widows are listed as Mary Hunt and Delia Hunt.Â
