Gottlieb Kugel, according to German emigration records, was born in 1830 in southwestern Germany. He applied to emigrate to North America in 1864. He applied for United States citizenship in 1865, and so was eligible to enter the military.
On March 13, 1865, Kugel enlisted as a substitute in Company H of the Pennsylvania 50th Infantry. Company H was recruited in Chester and Berks counties, Pennsylvania, so he may have arrived on American shores at Philadelphia. He was mustered out on July 30, 1865, in Georgetown, District of Columbia.
Kugel joined the Pennsylvania 50th in time to engage in General Philip Sheridan's Appomattox Campaign between March 28 and April 9, 1865. The Third Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, led to Confederate surrender on April 2, and the regiment pursued the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee. Lee surrendered on April 9.
After duty at Washington, DC, between April 21 and April 28, 1865, the regiment took part of the Union Army's Grand Review on May 23, 1865. The regiment was also present at the laying of the cornerstone for the Soldiers National Monument at Gettysburg on July 4, 1865.
