Elijah Tompkins Merrell (or Merrill), according to Pennsylvania veterans burial records, served in the army during the War of 1812, although that service would have been undertaken when Merrill was 51 years old. His body is buried in the Hopewell Cemetery in New Bedford.

He is listed in the 1820 and 1840 Federal Censuses as living in Vienna Township.

Elijah Tompkins Merrill was the father of Vienna clockmaker Ansel Merrell.
