Pennsylvania-born William Overmire was an unmarried 21-year-old farmer in Vienna when he registered for the draft in July 1863, midway through the Civil War (1861-1865). Township officials noted that Overmire had already served a three-month enlistment in the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Indeed, Overmire had signed up on April 25, 1861, only weeks after the fall of Ft. Sumter.
