Smith Parker was raised in a Vienna farming family before he entered military service in the Civil War. According to the 1863 Draft registration, the then-24-year-old married teamster was already serving in the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was mustered in for three years’ service. Yet Smith Parker’s name does not appear in other military records.

Vienna residents Merritt Emerson and Hiram Patten also served in the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
