Military Service: Artificer to Sergeant, 2nd Regiment, Ohio Heavy Artillery, Company M

The name Jacob W. Pound appears on the 1863 Civil War Draft Registration Records for Vienna, Ohio. At that time he was a thirty-year-old unmarried blacksmith. His father served as one of Vienna’s blacksmiths, with a shop across from Township Green. The Pound family also sent to the Civil War Jacob’s brothers Noah H. Pound (105th Ohio Volunteer Industry, Co. B) and Henry E. Pound (2nd Regiment, Ohio Heavy Artillery, Co. M). Fellow Vienna resident Hiram Sheldon also served in the 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery.

Pound was promoted to Sergeant from Artificer on March 1, 1865. “Artificer” likely referred to his job as blacksmith or carpenter for the battery.

Jacob W. Pound's name appears in a recruitment advertisement.Western Reserve Chronicle, September 9, 1863 (see image)
