At least two “George W. Scoville”’s lived in Vienna Township before the Civil War. The Scoville who may have served in the Civil War was George Washington Scoville, the son of merchant Smith and Rachel Bartholomew Scoville. If correct, he enlisted in October 1861 as a musician in the Company Band was a musician in the 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered out on August 27, 1862, at Memphis, Tennessee.

Scoville married Julia J. Norman in 1869. In 1900 he was a merchant in Macon, Illinois.
