Little is known about early Vienna Township settler Joel Wilmot. He was the seventh of eight children born to Asa (1716-1774) and Sarah (Johnson) Wilmot (1716-1804). Asa Wilmot's name appears in the first Federal Census, taken in 1790. The Wilmot family was living in Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Joel Wilmot married Rebecca Hotchkiss in 1784 in New Haven, Connecticut. The union produced eight children.
